With these assumptions? Sure he makes a lot of sense. But presented with only slightly shifted assumptions the conclusion becomes very different:

scenario [1,1] = economical disaster leads into ecological catastrophe due to increased birth rate associated with economical insecurity (think India). The population explosion then brings the world into a permanent state of war.

scenario [2,1] = . The human impact of global warming had been significant and we diminished it. The world is a better place...until the next global cooling period following right after.

scenario [1,2] = No further elaboration needed.

scenario [2,2] = Russian economy picks up not least due to its magnificent tourist industry and the leading role in the world's food production. Canada becomes a refuge for US immigrants escaping formally booming cities like Phoenix or Vegas. Middle east becomes uninhabitable so the war over land stops; oil becomes common property of humanity since nobody thought of running an independent state down there. Canada's west cost streets are lined by palm trees and for the first time the humanity feels like the Golden Age has finally arrived.

U-turn on climate change 'cover up' as university says it will publish leaked email data

British scientists accused of manipulating figures to strengthen the case for man-made global warming have bowed to international pressure and will publish their raw figures, it emerged today.

The U-turn by the University of East Anglia follows a week of controversy over hundreds of leaked emails which appear to show global warming academics 'spinning' research to the media and discussing how to dodge requests under the Freedom of Information Act.

The change of heart was forced by David Holland, a British climate sceptic who is threatening to prosecute researchers at the university's Climatic Research Unit for withholding information.

Man-made?: Sceptics say the emails show rising temperatures are natural

Some of the leaked emails included details of Freedom of Information requests he had submitted.

After receiving Mr Holland's request, a message sent on May 28, 2008 from one academic to another said: 'Oh MAN! Will this crap never end?'

Mr Holland, a grandfather from Northampton who graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from London University in 1966, has complained to the Information Commissioner's Office.

He said: 'It's like David versus Goliath. Thanks to these leaked emails a lot of little people can begin to make some impact on this monolithic entity that is the climate change lobby.'

The row - dubbed Climategate - was triggered when a hacker stole hundreds of emails sent and received by Prof Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit..

Global warming sceptics seized on the emails as proof that climate scientists are holding back information, manipulating figures and blocking opposition.

Even environmentalists say they reveal a culture of complacency and arrogance.

In one dated last month, a top American climatologist admitted it was a 'travesty' that scientists could not account for the lack of global warming in recent years.

In another, British researchers dismissed the work of scientists challenging the global warming orthodoxy as 'crap'.

In one of the most damning Prof Jones appeared to respond to news of the death of climate sceptic John Daly with the words 'in an odd way this is cheering news!'

Many showed academics debating how to prevent the publication of raw data showing global temperatures from around the world over since the mid 19th century.

The university said much of the raw data collected by weather stations was already available - and that it would ask permission from the owners of the rest to publish it.

'It is well known within the scientific community and particularly those who are sceptical of climate change that over 95 per cent of the raw station data has been accessible through the Global Historical Climatology Network for several years,' said the university's Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Trevor Davies.

'We are quite clearly not hiding information which seems to be the speculation on some blogs and by some media commentators.'

He added: 'Responses may take several months and that some countries may refuse permission due to the economic value of the data.'

The U-turn came as another leading climate scientist said the leaked emails displayed unattractive 'tribalism'.

Prof Mike Hulme, a climate scientist at the University of East Anglia, said scientific knowledge about climate change had to be 'publicly owned'.

'From outside, and even to the neutral, the attitudes revealed in the emails do not look good,' he said. 'To those with bigger axes to grind it is just what they wanted to find.'

The reverberations of the leak would live on long beyond next month's climate talks in Copenhagen, he said.

'Climate scientists will have to work harder to earn the warranted trust of the public - and maybe that is no bad thing,' he said.

'But this episode might signify something more in the unfolding story of climate change. This event might signal a crack that allows for processes of re-structuring scientific knowledge about climate change,' he added.
